Fever Treatment Expert Advice: Should medication be taken for every type of fever? Experts explain when it's okay to take paracetamol or other medications, and when it's best to let your body recover on its own.
When not to take fever medicine: Fever is common. Changes in weather, viral infections, or fatigue can cause the body temperature to rise. When this happens, many people take paracetamol or other medications without thinking. Let's find out if it's right to take medicine every time you have a fever. What do experts say about this?
What disease is fever?
According to Dr. Anil, Senior Internal Medicine Specialist at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi, fever is the body's defense mechanism. When viruses or bacteria attack, the body attempts to eliminate them by raising the temperature. A fever of 99-100 degrees Fahrenheit is normal and does not need to be immediately suppressed with medication. According to research published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases in 2025, a mild fever (100-102 degrees) helps the body fight infection. If the fever exceeds 103 degrees or lasts for more than three days, it is important to consult a doctor. The research also found that repeatedly suppressing fever with medication can weaken the immune system.
Why is it wrong to take medicine every time?
According to Dr. Anil, people often take paracetamol or ibuprofen as soon as they develop a fever, but this practice is not healthy. Excessive use of these medications can damage the liver and kidneys. Taking medication without understanding the cause of the fever can be dangerous. For example, if the fever is due to dengue or malaria, simply reducing the fever will not cure the illness. According to a 2024 report by the World Health Organization, 60 percent of people take over-the-counter medications for fever. This not only reduces the effectiveness of the medications but also increases the risk of side effects.
What to do when you have a fever?
According to Dr. Anil, if you have a mild fever, try home remedies first. Drink plenty of water, eat light food, and rest. In children, fevers up to 102 degrees can be managed without medication. Wiping with a damp cloth and wearing light clothing helps. If the fever is accompanied by headache, vomiting, or difficulty breathing, consult a doctor immediately. This could be a sign of a serious illness. Measure the fever with a thermometer, and if the fever exceeds 103 degrees, take medication as directed by your doctor.
These methods will work
- Hydration is essential: Fever causes dehydration. Drink water, coconut water, or ORS.
- Light meals: Eat porridge, soup, or porridge. Avoid fried foods.
- Rest: The body needs rest during a fever. Avoid overexertion.
- Cleanliness: Wash hands frequently to prevent the spread of infection.
