The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) featured speeches from many world leaders, but the addresses by leaders from six smaller nations went viral, garnering widespread attention on the UN's official YouTube channel. These countries - Indonesia, Kenya, Thailand, Nigeria, South Korea, and Colombia - spoke on critical global issues such as peace, climate change, economic inequality, and international justice.
Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaeo, whose country remains a popular destination for Indian travelers, called attention to the impacts of ongoing conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, the Gaza crisis, and climate change on ordinary people. He advocated for increased global cooperation and peaceful resolution of territorial disputes, including those involving Cambodia, affirming Thailand's position on peace.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto delivered a passionate plea for global peace and justice, emphasizing the need for equal opportunity worldwide. He made headlines by announcing Indonesia’s readiness to send 20,000 or more youth to Palestine to support peace efforts.
Kenyan President William Ruto called for reforms in global financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank, highlighted the need for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council, and addressed ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Haiti. He described the UN as facing its greatest crisis of credibility due to persistent global inequalities.
Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima demanded equal digital access for all and called for a clear two-state solution to the Gaza-Palestine conflict as key to long-lasting peace.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung urged an end to unnecessary military tensions with North Korea, stressing the need for peace in the Korean peninsula.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro Urrego spoke eloquently about his country’s dedication to fighting drug trafficking, upholding human rights, and seeking justice. He called for an immediate end to the genocide in Palestine and emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation and international justice.
Collectively, these speeches highlighted united calls for peace, social justice, climate action, and reform of global institutions, underscoring the vital role smaller nations play in shaping the future of international cooperation and human dignity
