Andre Onana was determined to remain at Manchester United and demonstrate his worth as their No.1 goalkeeper earlier this summer. And that resolve may be tested as United look to sign Emi Martinez before Monday night's transfer deadline, with a £40million bid being readied. Onana's future at Old Trafford came under scrutiny earlier in the window after Monaco made enquiries about the shot-stopper's availability, with the French club considering a potential swoop.
But Onana informed close friends that he wishes to remain at United and battle to retain his first-team position, despite enduring two inconsistent campaigns since his arrival. Altay Bayindir has started the season as Ruben Amorim's No.1 and it remains to be seen if that has affected Onana's stance on his future.
While replacing the goalkeeper was not considered a top priority for United during the summer, the club are closing in on Senne Lammens from Antwerp and remain open to bids for Onana and Bayindir.
Onana, who joined from Inter Milan for £47.2million two seasons ago, has struggled with consistency at United, though this did not deter Monaco from expressing their interest months ago.
The Cameroon international offered an enigmatic response when questioned about a potential departure from United this summer. "Will I leave?" said Onana. "I don't know, we'll see."
Nevertheless, sources close to the 29-year-old goalkeeper have disclosed his eagerness to stay at United, despite approaches from Monaco and Saudi Pro League clubs, where he could potentially more than double his existing £120,000-per-week wages.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez was reportedly keen on securing a switch to United and the Red Devils are now plotting a swoop for the Argentina international who turns 33 on Tuesday.
Amorim briefly benched Onana last season but was resolute when questioned about the need for a new goalkeeper. "We need to improve every position on the field; goalkeeper is the same," the United boss stated.
"If our team scores more goals and our strikers are better, we will defend better. Sometimes you have a season where you are underperforming. We are going to make that evaluation for any position in the squad."
