An expert has revealed which part of the fridge is best for storing milk. Storing your milk properly will keep it fresher for longer, so it's important to know where to keep it so you can hang onto it for longer. When milk spoils, it can ruin your day. There are so many things we use milk for, from porridge to cereal to tea and coffee. However, there is one simple way to keep your milk fresher for longer, and it's all about how you store it.
It turns out that storing food anywhere in the fridge doesn't always yield the same results. Instead, you should store different food items in different parts of the fridge to maximise freshness and usability. One expert has smashed the theory that milk should be stored on the fridge door, which is a popular choice as it is an easy way to fit a bottle of milk into your fridge. However, the middle shelf is actually the best place for it.
"Cheese, milk, and similar products should be stored towards the middle and top shelves of the fridge," said Jamie Cooper, Senior Product Manager for Refrigeration at Hotpoint, an appliance brand in the UK. "Avoid storing milk in the door. Whilst it's very convenient, the temperature fluctuations caused by opening and closing the door can cause it to spoil faster."
When it comes to the fridge door, you should reserve this for less perishable goods such as sauces, jams and condiments. Meanwhile, the bottom shelf should be reserved for foods like meat and fish, because it is the coldest part of the fridge.
Jamie added: "The ideal fridge temperature is between 0.5C and 5C. However, even within this range, different areas of your fridge will be warmer or cooler. Storing items in the correct temperature zones keeps them fresh for longer."
Another misconception that Jamie contradicted is storing fruits and vegetables together in the crisper drawer. He added: "You shouldn't store fruit in a drawer that contains vegetables.
"It's likely to produce ethylene, a natural gas that can over-ripen other fresh food when trapped in a confined space. Keeping fruit and vegetables separate can help extend the life of your produce."
