UK weather maps turn icy blue and show exact date 0C Arctic chill hits - 12 coldest areas

Brits will soon have to swap their sunhats and sunglasses for their gloves and winter coats as a 0C Arctic chill is making its way to the UK. Parts of Britain looks set to freeze as winter makes an early appearance for millions across the country.

WXCHARTS weather maps have turned green and blue, indicating that freezing conditions will soon come. The brutal chilly weather will hit 12 British cities the hardest, the mercury could even drop below sub zero. The bone-chilling weather will smash into the country on September 24 with a north-south divide likely. The north of the country will shiver under a wall of cold weather, whilst the south will see the mercury hover around a more respectable 10C.

At 6am on September 24 parts of the Scottish Highlands will see temperatures plunge to an icy -4C, whilst the capital Edinburgh will shover under -3C. The entirety of Scotland will not see the mercury go above 0C.

Elsewhere, the north west and north east will see temperatures drop to between -2C and 0C. Yorkshire and the Humber will not be exempt from the brutal weather with 0C likely.

The icy weather will not improve throughout the day as 12 hours later at 6am the mercury will still struggle to go above 0C for Scotland and the north of England.

At 6am the following morning, September 25 those in the Scottish Highlands will wake up to freezing conditions of 0C.

However, towns and cities in the far north of Scotland such as Wick will be slightly warmer at 7C. Key cities including Glasglow and Edinburgh will see the mecury hover between 2C-3C.

Newcastle and Carlisle will be the coldest cities in England with temperatures to plunge to an icy 2C-3C.

Seperately in the Met Office's weather outlook the forecaster warns: "This period is likely to be changeable. Areas of low pressure are likely at times, especially towards the north of the UK.

"These will bring spells of rain and showers, some of which are likely to be heavy at times with a risk of hail and thunder, and some windy conditions, especially if any deep lows form."
