Bengal leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was suspended for the remainder of the special session of the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday for disrupting proceedings on a motion.
Speaker Biman Banerjee held him guilty for interrupting Bengal education minister Bratya Basu during the debate, accusing him of making "defamatory" remarks against the Indian Army. He shouted slogans against the TMC government and demanded that Basu’s comments be struck off the parliamentary records, which was denied by the Speaker.
"I am forced to suspend you for repeatedly interrupting speeches and leaving your seat," Banerjee announced.
Suvendu Adhikari reacted to the suspension, calling it "unethically forced out." "I was suspended because I protested against Basu's defamatory remarks against the Indian Army. We want those remarks to be expunged".
The suspension would continue for the remaining days of the session, which concludes on Thursday, reported PTI.
Following the order, BJP legislators staged a walkout, chanting slogans "We don't want this pro-appeasement Mamata government", "shame, shame."
During the debate, Basu had alleged that the Army dismantled a TMC protest pandal near the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road. He drew a parallel with the sacrifices of the 1952 language movement in erstwhile East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.
