NEW DELHI: CJI B R Gavai on Monday recommended the name of his Supreme Court colleague and the senior-most judge after him, Justice Surya Kant , as his successor for the post of Chief Justice of India .
CJI Gavai has sent the letter of recommendation to the Union law ministry.
The appointment of the CJI is guided by the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), which outlines the process for appointing, transferring, and elevating judges to the Supreme Court and high courts.
Justice Surya Kant will become the 53rd Chief Justice of India and is set to assume office on November 23, once the Centre issues the formal notification. He is expected to serve until February 27, 2027.
Who is Justice Surya Kant
Justice Surya Kant hails from Hisar in Haryana and comes from a middle-class family. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Law in 1984 from Maharshi Dayanand University , Rohtak.
He began his legal practice at the district court in Hisar the same year and moved to Chandigarh in 1985 to practice at the Punjab and Haryana high court .
He specialised in Constitutional, Service, and Civil law matters and was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court in May 2019. Justice Kant is due to retire in February 2027.
