Fresh from their World Cup victory, Team India called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, presenting him with a special jersey bearing the number “1” and “Namo” written on the back. The gesture symbolised gratitude and national unity, as the champions shared moments of celebration and reflection with the Prime Minister following their historic triumph.
“The victorious Indian Cricket Team met the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modiji, at his official residence,” BCCI Women posted on X.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Prime Minister for his words of encouragement and support that continue to inspire #TeamIndia. Jai Hind.”
The Indian team arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday amid tight security for their scheduled meeting with PM Modi. They had clinched their first major ICC trophy by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
“A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 final! Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports. #WomensWorldCup2025,” PM Modi had said in his social media post.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur recalled meeting PM Modi in 2017 when they had met him without the trophy. She said that now, meeting him with the trophy, the team wishes to meet him more often.
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana said PM Modi had motivated them and has been an inspiration for all of them. She also spoke about how girls are excelling in all fields today, crediting PM Modi’s efforts for this progress.
